Shirley Bernadine
Kalk
January 24, 1942 – April 30, 2026
It is with both sadness and joy that we honour the life of Shirley Kalk, 84, who passed away peacefully in Saskatoon, SK, on April 30, 2026.
Shirley was born on January 24, 1942, to Evelyn Carroll and Charlie Carroll in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was a creative, kind-hearted, and compassionate soul who cared deeply for those around her throughout her life. Her legacy as a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and dedicated teacher will never be forgotten. She gave selflessly to her daughter, Brenda; her son, David; and her granddaughter, Morgan, showing consistent, unconditional love throughout their lives. Shirley loved Morgan immensely and was proud to be referred to as “my mom” by her. She was also very proud of her granddaughter Kristin Kalk, who is following in her footsteps to become an educator.
Shirley was a dedicated educator in Northern Saskatchewan throughout her entire career. The community of Buffalo Narrows was her home, and the many children she taught across the North were her pride and joy. Shirley's passion for teaching was centred on preserving and valuing each child's personal experiences.
For a brief period, Shirley worked as a language consultant for the Northern Lights School Division. She shared her vision with fellow educators, inspiring teachers to create curriculum that reflected the communities in which they taught. Shirley embraced her community, and children loved being in her classroom. Years later, she was often approached by former students who thanked her for her dedication and devotion.
After retiring from teaching, Shirley's love of education continued to make a lasting impact. She is remembered by many for helping shape how young children would be nurtured through the community's first preschool. To this day, Apisci Mostosis Preschool remains an active part of early childhood education in Buffalo Narrows. Shirley often spoke fondly of her time in the centre and was honoured to see it thriving when she returned to Buffalo Narrows many years later.
Shirley will also be remembered for her endless creative endeavours, including painting, drawing, writing, scrapbooking, gardening, and more. She spent countless hours teaching people the art of ceramics. Shirley loved painting pieces and went to great lengths to show others how to create ceramics, both at home and in surrounding communities.
She was also a dog lover through and through. Her home, her sofa, and sometimes even her bed always had room for a best friend to snuggle close. She had an endless amount of love for Copper, Princess, Sparkles, Pepper, and many others over the years. This deep love for dogs was reflected in her final home. She could often be found in her room admiring photographs of her beloved companions and adding to her growing collection of dog figurines, surrounded by reminders of the dogs she cherished throughout her life.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Evelyn and Charlie Carroll; her younger brother, Gary Carroll; and her nephew, Nathan Carroll. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Brenda Kalk and David Kalk (Rose); her grandchildren, Morgan Wilson (Kale), Kristin Kalk, and Trace Herman; her sister, Gail Self and family; her extended family; and many close friends.
As per Shirley’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. However, a celebration of her life is being planned for the summer months.
To honour Shirley, please consider making a donation to your local animal shelter, planting a beautiful flower, or simply taking a moment to admire the birds, trees, and nature around you.
Cherished Memories Funeral Services is honoured to be entrusted with Shirley's care and arrangements.
