Philip Samuel Bartel, son of Melfred and Mary Ann Bartel, withdrew peacefully from this life on April 26, 2024, just three weeks after his mother died. Now mourning his passing, with abiding love, are his siblings, Sandra (Henry) Janzen, Vera (Hank) Weber, and Russell Bartel (Bridget Givogue); his nieces and nephews, Kristina Janzen (Peter Braun), David Janzen (Katherine Lawless), Robert Janzen (Hailey Winder), Melissa Weber, Jessica Weber (Nolan Skowronski); his care-givers, Kevan and Trudy Albrecht; and his countless friends.
Born in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Philip was raised on a farm near Drake by parents and wider family who adored him. After an education in nearby schools, he eventually moved to the Menno Home in Waldheim, where he was employed for many years, and then finally to a nearby group home.
From early childhood on, Philip charmed his family and community with his perpetual smile and cheerful spirit. Though his words were few, he found ways of endearing himself with an eager handshake, a mischievous grin, a hearty embrace, or playful admonition. All in his circle were happily subjected to his incessant teasing, punctuated by a gleeful chuckle. Though of gentle, unassertive demeanor, Philip was rarely on the sidelines, certainly not in the hearts of family and close acquaintances.
Philip’s memory for faces was prodigious – once Philip met you, he latched onto you as lifelong trusted friend. Not surprisingly, he forged a far-flung community of people whom he loved and who loved him in return. All who knew him came to respect Philip for his loyalty and his unerring ability to lift their spirits.
Throughout his life, Philip enjoyed collaborating with others. Any service he deemed meaningful would be offered willingly, without complaint, and usually with a crooked grin. In this way, he became an integral member in whatever community or family setting he found himself, steadfastly devoted to relationships of mutual benefit.
The last 26 years of his life, Philip spent in the gracious care of Kevan and Trudy Albrecht, who nourished him, physically and spiritually, in their home, embracing him as a beloved son. We, the family, are forever indebted to Kevan and Trudy for offering Philip the consoling warmth and compassionate stability of a loving home, especially in the increasingly difficult years as his health began to wane. Through their gentle, kindly care, Philip knew always, every day until the end, that he was loved.
We who mourn Philip’s passing, now continue into the future, finding solace in knowing that Philip is in God’s care. Now at peace, he lingers still among us as we remember his endearing spirit, and draw on his enduring smile to enlighten our own remaining days. He lived as stalwart brother and friend among us, and still has things to teach us.
