Paul Joseph Bernstrom

September 17, 1963 — July 11, 2025

With much sorrow and heavy hearts, the family of Paul Joseph Bernstrom, announce his sudden and unexpected passing on Friday July 11 ,2025 at age 61.

Paul was born on September 17, 1963, sixth child to Vern and Jeannette (nee Frechette) Bernstrom in The Pas, MB. Paul attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Mary Duncan Elementary (formerly The Pas School and known by locals as the Red Brick School), Scott Bateman Junior High and graduated from Margaret Barbour Collegiate. He went on to study at Red River Community College and Keewatin Community College.

Paul enjoyed refereeing hockey games, cross-country skiing, road hockey, snowmobiling, working at the golf club and summers at the family cabin at Clearwater Lake - he loved that lake. He was fortunate to travel across Canada on summer vacations with his parents and brother Kevin. Paul was a member of The Pas Volunteer Fire Department and Kinsmen Club. He took great pride in being a member of each. Paul was blessed with a son, Ryan and daughter, Janelle from a previous marriage.

Paul connected with Elissa Troop in 2011, his classmate from the late 80’s from KCC and moved to Saskatoon. He joined the Saskatoon Kinsmen club following his move and hoped to continue his Fireman skills by volunteering to fight forest fires in Northern SK AND MB. His interests included Nascar, football, hockey, chuckwagon races, auctions, camping and kayaking. Many weekends were spent at Blackstrap or they would pick a lake on Friday night and take off for the weekend. His loved the Riders and went to many games, watched on TV or listened on the radio. Paul crossed two items off his bucket list - attending the Grey Cup in 2013 the Labour Day Classic in 2021. Paul and Elissa always enjoyed their time at the farm in LeRoy, SK. He loved driving the JD tractor, mowing grass, sitting by the fire pit and gazing at the sky through the telescope. His electrical and automotive knowledge was always put to test there. A few years ago they bought a Traeger smoker, and with help from his brother Kevin and countless hours of research, he became very good. Paul’s specialties were ribs, brining ham, and making his own bacon. Although Paul loved Dachshund dogs when Mickie the cat showed up at 5 weeks old 10 years ago his heart melted and she became Daddy’s girl. Paul would often set the tent up at the farm so she could camp and also put on numerous “Mickie miles” going up the North 40 so she could catch bugs, climb trees and power poles.

Paul was excited to start planning their trip to Churchill next year. Paul was also proud and happy when Ryan announced his engagement.

Paul will be lovingly remembered by Elissa and Mickie of Saskatoon, SK; son Ryan (fiancée Arielle Blundell) of Regina, SK; daughter Janelle of Moose Jaw, SK; sister Jo-Anne Dawe (Bob) of West Kelowna, BC; brothers David and Kevin (Sheryl) all of The Pas, MB; sisters-in-law Marlene, Pat, Leanne (Ken); nieces Janet, Wendy, Danielle, Lindsay; nephew Kristoffer; as well as many relatives. He was predeceased by his parents Vern and Jeannette (nee Frechette) Bernstrom; brothers Ron and Bryan; Elissa’s Mom Alana Troop; as well as many extended family members.
