With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Patrick Holunga on Wednesday April 9, 2025, surrounded by family at St Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, Sk.
Our world has lost an adored husband, father, Moshu, brother, uncle and friend. Pat was a good man who lived a good life. He will be remembered for his magnetic smile, kindness and humility. Pat was an appreciated addition to any gathering of family, friends and organizations. His outgoing personality and genuine interest in the lives of others set him apart from most people and allowed him to connect with anyone.
Pat was born in Russell, Mb to parents Willie and Rose Holunga on July 10, 1941. He was a big brother to Carl and Iris who loved him and will miss him dearly. Pat spent his early years on the family farm in Shell Valley, Mb and moved to Snow Lake, Mb at the age of 13. He had fond memories of his life on the farm and the people he knew there. Pat always kept a strong connection to his Romanian roots
He met his wife Joan in Snow Lake in 1961. Joan was a Grade 2 schoolteacher, who had moved north to begin her career. Pat and Joan married on August 14, 1965. They welcomed their daughter, Valerie (Glen) in April 1970. They had a son, Shane (Julie) in April 1971. Their youngest daughter, Jennifer (Rory) was born in May 1976.
Living in northern Manitoba is where he grew to be the gentle and beloved man we all knew. He loved fishing, picking berries and mushrooms in the bush, playing cards, hockey, baseball, curling and golf. He also enjoyed music, dancing and socializing.
Pat worked for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting for 35 years. He started his career as a truck driver and miner. In 1969 he began his electrical apprenticeship and worked as an underground electrician until he retired in 1996 and moved to Saskatoon in April 2005.
The true joy in Pat’s life was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was Moshu to Zachary (26), Elias (21), Madeline (18), Hayden (17), and Quinn (14). He and Joan attended countless school plays, recitals, hockey, ringette, baseball, lacrosse, football and soccer games. They would travel to Calgary, Golden Co, Saskatoon and numerous locations in between, just to cheer on their grandchildren. Each grandchild had their own special relationship with Moshu; be it getting blue whales, playing crib, eating wagon wheels and curly sausage, receiving giant hugs and naso nasos. Moshu’s unconditional love was felt by all.
As per Pat’s wishes, there will be no public service. This summer his wife, children and grandchildren will gather to remember and celebrate him in his favorite place: on a boat on a northern lake.
The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care Pat received at St Paul’s Hospital. The professionalism, compassion and respect shown to all of us eased this difficult journey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pat’s memory to KidSport Canada or a charity of your choice.
