On Dec 30th, 2025, Leonard Allan Holowaychuk left this world, free from pain.
Len was born, on June 4th, 1945, in Willingdon, Alberta, to John and Violet (Dary) Holowaychuk, the first of 5 children.
He gew up on farms, first near Ispas, Alberta and then Marwayne,Alberta. Those early years instilled a very strong work ethic, a soft heart for animals and the value of a job well done.
After Len finished high school, he attended NAIT studying metallurgy, and then began his mining career at Discovery Gold Mine, NWT. In April of 1968, he began working for Alwinsal Potash where he remained in the mill until January, 2003 when he suffered a massive heart attack in one of the bins at work. People who worked with him, often referred to him as a "companying man".
On October 10, 1970, Len married Loreen Melnechenko and began a partnership of 55 years. John Aaron's birth in 1973 made it a family of three and in 1983, Rebecca finalized the family of 4.
Each and every grandchild brought a twinkle to his eye, and even though he could no longer take them for walks, he loved watching their antics. It didn't take but a minute for them to wrap him around their little finger. Grandpa always had a bit of cash for each of them, every time he saw them.
Len loved sports, especially the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Briuns, Edmonton Oilers and curling.
Trips to Victoria B.C, Gabriola Island and Mexico (especially Mazatlan) resulted in many precious memories being made with family and friends. He enjoyed cruising especially through the Panama Canal which he said was "a real learning experience". But his very favorite place was the cabin at Greenwater Provincial Park, where the country boy was back in the "bush".
Leonard was predeceased by his son Jarrett (1982), parents, John and Violet Holowaychuk, and parents in-law Nick and Dora Melnechenko.
Cherishing his memory are his wife Loreen, son John Aaron, wife Noime and grandson Nicoy: and daughter Rebecca, husband Shane Lincoln and grandchildren Shay, Aubrey, Jesse and Kayben.
Also left behind are his siblings, Norman (Michelle), Iris ( Ron Wolfe), Harvey (Lorraine) and Judy (Dan Abel). In-laws, Lorne and Evelyn Skoronski, and many nephews and nieces.
Our most sincere gratitude to the Pallative Unit at St.Pauls Hospital, where the amazing staff ensured Len lived his last days, pampered and free from pain.
Len loved dogs, so charitable donations may be made to Prairie Pooches Rescue, Box 159, Cando, Sask, S0K0V0, or a charity of your choice.
In keeping with Leonard's wishes, no formal service will be held.
"When I am down and, oh, my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then I am still and wait here in the silence
Until You come and sit awhile with me
You raise me up so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong when I am on Your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be."
Cherished Memories Funeral Services is honoured to be entrusted with Mr. Leonard Holowaychuk's care and arrangements.
