It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dad Hugh Leon Haas. He was surrounded by loved ones as he took his last breath at 1724 hrs on Jan 7, 2026
Leon was predeceased by his parents Hugh and Doris (Legge) Haas, his in laws Dave and Sally Bollman, brother John (Jack) Haas, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Almira and Jack McDowell, brother-in-law Robert By.
Leon is survived by his wife of almost 59 years Linda (nee Bollman), his daughter Rhonda Case (Richard), his son Darryl (Coralee), his 4 grandchildren Cory, Cole, Aryanna, and Noelle, brother Gary Haas (Maryanne), sister in laws Madsine Madsen and Luanne By, brother in law Dallas (Vivian) Bollman and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Leon was born in Prince Albert, SK. to Hugh and Doris. Doris quickly hopped on a train with her newborn son and went down east to see Hugh before he went off to serve his country in WWII. When Hugh returned in 1945, he took a job with the Saskatoon Post Office. This is where Leon spent his childhood. As Leon grew, he had many hobbies and interests. He loved his cars, motorcycles and the outdoors. In 1958 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served for almost 4 years. In 1965 he met the love of his life Linda at the Fort Qu’Appelle TB Sanatorium where they both worked. They moved to BC shortly after, and they were married there in 1967. Their family grew to three in 1969 when Rhonda was born, and then to four in 1972 when they had Darryl. In 1982 Leon and Linda moved from BC back to Saskatchewan and settled in Warman. In 1988 they moved to Regina. In 2004 they built their dream home overlooking Last Mountain Lake. This is where Leon loved it the most, surrounded by the sounds of nature, close to the water that he loved. They were heavily involved at Strasbourgh Alliance Church and made many great friends there. This is where Leon’s hobby with honeybees was revived and kept Leon busy. In 2020 the family had to make the difficult decision to sell the Lake House and move Leon and Linda to Martensville as Linda’s dementia was getting worse. In 2023 they moved to Oliver Place in Saskatoon, a fantastic senior living with a memory care area attached where mom would be moved to in May of 2024. Dad was able to visit mom everyday and able to help care for her and show her the love that 60 years together builds.
Leon was heavily involved in his kid’s activities. He was at every swim competition, coached Darryl in baseball, lacrosse, hockey, never missed a football game. As Cory started playing football Leon and Linda would drive in from the lake to watch. Darryl made sure Leon was in the stands for Cole’s special play at a football game in 2024. He enjoyed seeing and watching “His Boys” grow up and taught them many great things … and some bad words along the way. Leon and Darryl converted a garden tractor for Cole to drive; Leon would follow along on his quad smiling and enjoy the moment. He had many long talks with Cory and was so proud when he achieved his red seal status as a Heavy Duty Mechanic. Leon could sit in a boat for hours on end just enjoying the water while fishing. His love of fishing was passed along to Darryl (and grandsons) and they spent hours together pulling their different boats all over Saskatchewan from lake to lake. Sometimes going to multiple lakes in the same day hours apart. Leon’s love of the open road was not lost on Darryl as Leon would take him to baseball and lacrosse on the back of his motorcycle in BC. That love of riding has grown on Cory and Cole as well. Leon had a few different names like Poppa, Dad, but one of his favorites he received from his Daughter-in-law Coralee was Farsil. Leon was being his normal kidding self and Coralee was going to call him and old fart and saw the word Fossil on his shirt and name Farsil was born. Coralee would spoil Leon from time to time with fresh homemade butter tarts that were based off his mom’s recipe … as he said these are best served frozen!
Leon and Rhonda enjoyed long discussions with one often arguing a side they didn’t agree with just to keep the conversation going. They shared a love of creating and crafting, creating logos and designs that they would spend hours putting on shirts and mugs together. This would often result in more discussions about the best fabric base or the latest printing techniques. One of Leon’s favorite places in Saskatoon was down by the weir on the South Saskatchewan River. If the pelicans were out, he had an ice cream in his hand and any of “his girls” were beside him, dad was content. Leon loved the outdoors and had a deep passion for Ranger Lake Bible Camp, he served on the board there in the 1980s and passed this love of RLBC on to Rhonda who spent 6 years there as a camper, volunteer, and staff member. The love of Ranger Lake has reached the third generation with his youngest grandchild, Noelle who has spent 9 summers there as a camper and staff member. Leon loved visiting RLBC again in recent years.
Leon was a class 3 Steam Engineer by trade although he had many other jobs along the way. His most important title came with out any monetary payment and a special title of Poppa to his 4 Grandchildren. He loved his fishing, hunting, quadding with Cory, loved his talks on the deck with Cole and later talking multiple times a week on the phone. He enjoyed sitting quietly in a coffee shop with Aryanna and devoured any sweet treats she made for him. Noelle shares his quiet side, and they enjoyed time just being with each other, nothing had to be said, nothing had to be done. Being together was always enough.
Leon would help anyone who needed it. Always putting others ahead of himself. Leon was not a bystander; he would get down and do the dirty work himself. That was very evident in their dream house he was there everyday putting his stamp on the entire process. Darryl was there whenever possible to help with the heavy lifting. His son in law Richard helped with the electrical. In the end Leon and Linda had “Their Space,” was small enough for them and plenty big enough to host everyone for Christmas,’ anniversary gatherings … all the while Leon would sit back in his favorite chair and enjoy the sounds of his family. A family he loved deeply, a family he cherished, a family he built.
Leon’s family wants to thank all the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon for making Leon comfortable in his last days.
Cherished Memories is honoured to have been entrusted with Leon's care.
