Lawrence G. Nelson

November 13, 1948 — December 28, 2025

With deep sadness we announce the death of Lawrence G. Nelson of Warman, Saskatchewan, on December 28, 2025.

Larry was born November 13, 1948 in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, the son of Paul and Iris Nelson. He grew up on the farm near Bapaume, attending OXO school in Bapaume and Spiritwood High School. After graduation he moved to Saskatoon to work with his uncle Jack Olson at Mercury Printers, beginning a long career in the printing industry. He was working at Houghton Boston Printers when he retired in 2007.

He married Donna in 1970, and they purchased a house in Warman in 1974, just before the birth of their first child, Kristi. Son Rhett soon followed, and the family became very involved in community activities. Shortly after arriving in Warman, Larry was invited to join the Volunteer Fire Department, a position he maintained for 16 years. He was an active member of the Lions Club and the Curling Club, spending many winters putting in the two sheets of natural ice with Ron Haichert and Corney Klassen. He curled in the mens’ league and in the mixed league with Donna. The basement shelves were filled with trophies earned in league and bonspiel play. In later years they curled at the Granite Curling Club where they made many friends.

Larry was part of the group responsible for the design and creation of Warman’s first golf course, located on the south side of town. Larry avoided the spotlight, preferring instead to work quietly behind the scenes, though he felt honoured when the City of Warman named a park after him in 2018, in recognition of his years of service to the community.

Our family loved to camp and fish, and we spent many happy summers at various lakes around Saskatchewan until we purchased a cabin at Chitek Lake in 1991. Larry enjoyed fishing with his family, and he took pride in his ability to remove all bones when filleting the catch. He loved to visit with family and friends, and we all enjoyed his sharp and subtle sense of humour.

Larry was predeceased by his father Paul, mother Iris, his brother Allan (Butch), and his sister Heather in infancy. He is survived by Donna, his wife of 55 years; his daughter Kristi and granddaughter Amelia; his son Rhett and partner Jen (and grand-dog Finn); and his sister Cheryl (husband Dave and sons Chris and Devin).

Larry had a deep, quiet love for his family, and nothing made him happier than to have us all together under one roof. He was so proud of our accomplishments, and his strength was a great comfort when things didn’t go our way. His clear-headed, rational thinking often helped us when we were struggling. We are devastated to lose him, and we miss him more than we can say.

We would like to thank Warman First Responders, Warman Fire Department, Warman RCMP and EMS for their kindness and compassion in a very difficult time. In keeping with Larry’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Warman Fire Department.

Cherished Memories is honoured to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Larry Nelson.
