Obituary

Jim was born on June 29, 1939, in Edam, Saskatchewan, to Agnes and Warren Brownell. He was raised on a dairy farm in Meota, where he learned the value of hard work, resilience, and community - qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.

Jim had a natural talent for hockey and came close to playing professionally, a dream that was cut short by a broken leg. Still, his love of sports never faded. Whether it was curling, bowling, or golf, he played with determination and heart. Though he was competitive, what he enjoyed most was the camaraderie and the friendships formed along the way.

He was involved in his community, generously giving his time to clubs and service organizations. Jim built a strong and varied career; working with CIBC, the Department of Natural Resources, owning and operating two hotels, and finishing his career at the Provincial Correctional Centre in Prince Albert. Even in retirement, he wasn’t ready to slow down and spent many years working with the Commissionaires.

In 1974, Jim married the love of his life, Mildred. Together they built a life centered on family, raising four children and later enjoying the arrival of eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was proud of his family and took great joy in their accomplishments and gatherings. Some of his happiest moments were spent surrounded by them.

In his later years, Jim enjoyed golfing, playing cribbage, sharing stories, and having the occasional “cool one.” He held firmly to his beliefs, took quiet (and sometimes loud) pride in the life he built, and believed that anything worth starting was worth finishing.

Jim was predeceased by his parents Agnes and Warren Brownell; sisters Joan (Frank) Simpson, Betty Brownell, and Diane (George) Lessard; brother Rae (Moreah) Sheldon. As well, in-laws Delores and Vern Whitson and Don Diederichs.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years, Mildred; daughter Trina Riemer - Jared (Erin) Riemer (Harper, Jase, and Tate), Evan (Kennedy) Riemer (Blakely and Allie), and Tyler (Alana) Riemer; sons Terry (Heather) Brownell - Nathan; Brian Brownell - Braydon (James) and Meghan (Isaac); Warren (Shelley) Brownell - Hunter (Amy) and Jaxson (Natasha). As well, in-laws Evelyn Diederichs, Liza and Tim Perkins, and Bev and Keith (Mac) MacDonald.

Jim’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the friendships he nurtured. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
