With immense love and sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Holly Rae Keyko (Hyland) on October 2, 2025, with her family by her side.
Holly was born on August 24, 1966, in Leader, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. After graduating from McCoy High School, she moved to Calgary, where she met Doug, with whom she had her son, Mckinley. Shortly after his birth, Holly returned to Medicine Hat, where she later met the love of her life, Wayne. After a few years in North Battleford, while she frequently traveled to Saskatoon to complete her training as an Optician and Contact Lens Fitter, Holly, Wayne, and Mckinley moved back to Medicine Hat in 1997. She went on to work as a respected Optician for more than 15 years before eventually moving to the ranch.
Holly will be remembered for her hardworking spirit, sharp intelligence, and honesty — she was a straight shooter who always told you exactly what she thought. She loved tinkering with projects, woodworking, knitting and crocheting (especially slippers), riding her horses, and walking her dogs.
Most of all, Holly’s greatest joy was her family. She especially adored her grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as Nan. To them, she was more than a grandmother — she was their biggest cheerleader, their safe place, and their constant source of love. Whether it was watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, or simply being present for their sports activities, Nan made sure her grandchildren knew just how proud she was of them. Her love for them was boundless and will continue to guide them for the rest of their lives. Although she never had the chance to meet Olivia in person, she cherished the daily photos sent by Jessica and was so looking forward to visiting and holding her soon.
McKinley was Holly’s greatest legacy.
Through him, her brilliance, sharp wit and determination live on. She prepared him for life in her very own way, ensuring he would stand strong in the face of adversity and have the determination and work ethic to fight for his dreams. She was proud of the husband, father, and entrepreneur he has become.
Holly is survived by her devoted husband, Wayne Keyko; her son Mckinley Hyland (Janelle) and grandchildren Mavryk and Hudsyn; her stepdaughter Jessica Blenkiron (Dustin) and granddaughter Olivia; her parents Ed and Edna Hyland; her brother Kendall Colin Hyland (Jenelle) and their children Grace and Carter; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who became family.
In keeping with Holly’s wishes, there will not be a formal funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to follow.
Holly will be missed more than words can express, but her love, laughter, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, 55 Southwest Drive SW, Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 8E8.
Cherished Memories Funeral Services is honoured to be entrusted with Holly Keyko's care and arrangements.
