With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Garry Mackwell, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, papa, and friend, on October 10, 2025.
Garry was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on August 11, 1953, to Clem and Marion Mackwell. Before Garry learned to walk the family relocated to Melfort and it was there, at his father’s service station that his lifelong fascination with trucks began. Even at a young age, his eyes would light up when he saw the big trucks pull in. As soon as his feet could reach the pedals he was driving a truck on the farm for his Uncle Stan.
When Garry finally earned his driver’s license, farm vehicles gave way to tow trucks, and soon after, he graduated to the big rigs. Although he would often be away from home for long periods, he knew that his travels down the highways of North America always led home.
Garry met Linda in the summer of ‘69 and he knew she was meant to be his wife. They married in 1972, beginning a journey of over five decades filled with devotion, partnership, and family. Together, they raised three daughters: Laurie (Kevin), Teresa AKA Toni (Steve), and Diana (Dylan), each of whom brought immense pride and joy to his life.
A proud grandfather, Garry adored his grandchildren—Megan (Jordan), Emily, Gabriel, and Katherine—and his great-granddaughter, Caydence and he cherished every moment he spent with them whether at a school concert, a sporting event or even a simple pizza party.
Born with the gift of gab and always in search of an adventure, Garry built lifelong friendships and lasting memories with everyone he met. His mother often said that once he learned to talk, he never stopped—and it was true. Be it chatting with a stranger in line or catching up with an old friend, Garry was always up for a story and a laugh. Garry was the one to turn to if you needed a hand and he took tremendous pride in being known as Mr. Fix-it.
When I'm Gone
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile
Forget unkind words I have spoken
Remember some good I have done
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day
Then forget to grieve for my going
I would not have you sad for a day
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay
And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best
-Lyman Hancock
