On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, Edward Kornaga passed away peacefully at the age of 74 years, surrounded by his children.
Family was the cornerstone of Edward's life, and he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters, Shannon Leonard and Carla Kornaga, and his grandchildren, Jonathon and Matthew; his son, Steven Kornaga(Erin), and his grandchild, Lilika; and his daughter, Devin Kornaga(Neil Harmon), and his grandchildren, Shelby and Hailey. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Laverdiere(Robert); his brother, Fred Kornaga; his sister-in-law, Judy Kornaga; and numerous family and friends.
Edward was predeceased by his mother, Evelyn Kornaga; his father, Joseph Kornaga; and his brothers, Kenneth Kornaga and Stanley Kornaga.
Born on April 6, 1951, to Evelyn and Joseph, Edward's early years were spent on the family farm in Glen Bain, Saskatchewan. His journey led him to work in Thompson, Manitoba at the nickel mine, for a time, before the pull of family and the prairies brought him back to Glen Bain. It was there that he met and married Debra Kornaga(Walker), and together they built a family that he held as his greatest joy and source of pride. Edward moved his family to Fox Creek, Alberta to work in the oil industry for Amoco for a few years before moving back to live in Saskatchewan.
While working for CP Rail in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, a vehicle accident ended Edward's working career at the age of 35 years. The family then moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan so Edward could have more opportunities.
Even after losing his eyesight, Edward's determination shone through as he embraced new passions, finding joy and connection through cross-country skiing, where he participated in numerous Ski for Light events across different provinces and proudly achieved success in several races alongside his dedicated guide, Eugene Schumacher. He also enjoyed bowling, karaoke, the simple pleasure of a walk, playing crib and rummy, and valued the support he found within the White Cane Club meetings. In a fondly remembered experience, Edward also had the opportunity to co-star in a Walmart Christmas Commercial in 1999, of which he was proud of and is on YouTube.
A graveside service to honour and celebrate Edward's life will be held at a later date, providing an opportunity for family and friends to gather and share their memories of him. The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to either the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) or the Brain Injury Association, causes that were close to Edward's heart.
Cherished Memories is honoured to be entrusted with the care and arrangements for Edward.
