Obituary

With heavy hearts, the family of Edward "Ed" Richard announces his passing on September 30, 2026.

Edward Robert Joseph was born on March 15, 1961 at St. Boniface hospital in Winnipeg, MB. He was the seventh of ten children, and the sixth son.

Ed was predeceased by his mother Anne Richard (2005), his father Alexandre Richard (1991), brother Ronald (1972); father-in-law John Pawliuk (2024) and mother-in-law Nadine Osolinsky (Pawliuk) in 2012.

Ed will be remembered first and foremost for his love of family, especially his wife of 28 years Bernie Richard; their sons Christopher, Alexander and William (Danielle); his grandkids Jayden, Caisten, Rayne, Isaac; and his favorite little poupon, Georgia.

Ed will be lovingly remember by his siblings and their families: Paul (Diane), Ronald and Trevor; Alex (Maureen), Derek and Mathew; John (Louise); Raymond (Lorette) Cody, Mike, and Jennfer; Denise Lesperance (Roger), Jamie, Justin and Joanne; Marcel, David and Danielle and their mother Kathy; Andy (Rachelle), Amanda, Melissa; Joanne (Bruce) Nicholson, Dallas, Travis and Brody, as well as many great nieces and nephews.

He will also be missed by his mother-in-law Lana Pawliuk; sisters and brothers-in-law Corinne Pawliuk and Don Spooner, Jeff Pawliuk, Val Wynes and Kathryn Falkner (Ashley Wynes), Laurie Waldner-Pawliuk (Danielle and Rylan Parenteau, Dean Jr.) and Brent Abbott.

In his early life, Ed lived in several locations including St. Malo, MB, Red Cliff, AB, and Willowbunch, SK. His family then settled and remained in Duck Lake, SK, which is where Ed considered home.

Ed started working in the transport industry as a teenager. It was lifestyle that he loved. As of this year, at 65, he had covered literally millions of accident-free miles across Canada and the United States.

From an early age Ed had a passion for sports, especially hockey. He played competitively as a teen, then later became a proud member of the legendary Richard Rockets, a team comprised of Richard brothers and their friends.

Ed also served as an assistant coach for his sons’ hockey teams for many years, leaving a lasting impression on so many, both on and off the bench.

Ed was a long-time fan and optimistic supporter of the Habs. For Christmas one year, his sons surprised him with a Montreal Canadiens jersey and tickets to a game in Montreal. They made some wonderful memories on that family trip in 2024.

Together, Bernie and Ed built a family and a home filled with love. Their door was always open, and all were made to feel welcome. Their place is where everyone always seemed to gather. Many, many happy memories were made at Ed and Bernie’s place.

Another thing Bernie and Ed both enjoyed was camping. They both loved staying up late into the night sitting by the fire and listening to music. Every year, they looked forward to the Richard fishing trip in Northern Saskatchewan where all the siblings and their kids would gather; a tradition that has been carried on for 50 years as of 2026. But their ultimate camping adventure took place in 2022 when Bernie and Ed travelled to Alaska with Ed’s family. And as country music lovers, another dream was fulfilled when they got to visit Nashville.

Ed will always be remembered as a kind, selfless, thoughtful, determined and hardworking man. He was a humble man who treated everyone he met with dignity and respect. There are countless stories of Ed stopping on the highway to help complete strangers who had broken down or got stuck in a storm, even when it meant going way out of his way or spending his own money to give someone a hand and ensure their safety.

We are blessed to have had Ed in our lives. We will all miss his friendly, generous nature. The fun-loving and competitive guy who insisted on always playing for money, even if it was just a board game. The guy who you could call upon for anything, at any time.

Bernie and the boys would like to thank Ed’s niece Ashley Wynes for the loving care she provided to Ed, daily, for the last few months; thanks to David Richard for filling in when Ashley was unavailable. The family also extends thanks to the staff at the Cancer Center and the staff of the St Paul’s Palliative Care Unit.

A family-led Celebration of Ed’s Life will take place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Brian King Centre, 202 – 8 Avenue North in Warman, SK.

In honour of Ed’s love for sports, especially the Habs, Broncos and the Bombers, feel free to wear your favorite jersey (unless it’s a Riders or Maple Leafs jersey) Ed would have said.

Cherished Memories is honoured to be entrusted with Mr. Ed Richard's care and arrangements.
