Denis "Dwight" Powell

October 4, 1950 — January 2, 2024

The immediate and extended family of D. Dwight Powell are deeply saddened to announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, January 2nd at his home in Rosetown, Saskatchewan at the age of 73.

Dwight was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, and raised on a farm near Wiseton and the eldest of 4 children. After graduating from high school, Dwight attended Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta. With his natural talent of public speaking and his love of music, he became a broadcaster for television and radio and played many a gig with his band “The Hip Express”. From Saskatchewan to Calgary, to Manitoba and then finally, Waterloo, Ontario, Dwight found passion and great success as an insurance advisor for Mutual Life of Canada (now Sunlife Financial). He worked for Sunlife for over 30 years, holding many positions within the company. Dwight retired in 2007, as a Senior Regional Vice President.

As mentioned above, Dwight loved music; it was in his blood. Over the course of his life, he composed many of his own songs, using his exceptional talents in singing and guitar playing and released his own albums on itunes and Spotify under the name “One Eyed Cat”. He performed a mix of covers and personal music for eager listeners throughout Ontario and Saskatchewan and was always able to fill a dance floor.

Along with his joy of music, he was also an avid boater, woodworker and Master scuba diver in his slightly younger years. Dwight was a diehard Blue Jays and Saskatchewan Roughriders fan and a HUGE supporter of his Grandson Noah’s baseball team, boasting about his talents to anyone who would listen. His pride for his children and grandchildren knew no bounds and if you knew Dwight, you surely knew of them as well.

Dwight is survived by his son Dana (Deanna) and his daughter Lee. He will truly be missed by his grandchildren, Noah, Ariyah, Xander, as well as his former spouse Maureen and his loving partner of the last 13 years, Linda.

A Celebration of Life dinner was held in Saskatoon and further services are pending.

To honour Dwight and his love of music, you may choose to make a donation in his name to MusiCounts, a music education charity that helps make music education inclusive and accessible for youth across Canada by providing musical instruments, equipment and resources.
