Berna Louise
Johnson
Jul 30, 1931 — Aug 17, 2026
Berna Johnson (nee Armstrong), passed away on August 17, 2026, at Porteous Lodge in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Berna had just celebrated her 95th birthday.
Berna was born July 30, 1931, in the R.M. of Perdue, Saskatchewan on Sec. 3 Township 36, Range 11 West of the 3rd.
Berna attended The Red Brick Perdue School. Upon completing her grade 10 she went to work part time at the Wickbergs Café in Perdue.
Berna married Marshall Johnson of Kinley, Saskatchewan on August 18, 1947. In 1949 Linda was born, followed by two more girls, Verna in 1950 and Carol in 1952. A few short years later Sherman arrived in 1956. Berna and Marshall shared 60 years together until Marshall’s passing in 2007.
While living in Asquith from 1958 to 1965 Berna worked at various jobs. She sold Fuller Brush, worked at a clothing store in Saskatoon, Hamre’s Café in Asquith, the Asquith Coop and did domestic work and childcare for a few clients. There was never a job she didn’t take pride in, including looking after the cattle and the hogs along with milking and shipping cream in 1967 on the farm at Kinley.
In 1973 Berna went to work at the Double D Restaurant in Perdue and put in 18 years as their cook. In addition to her regular position of cook many hours were spent preparing a town favourite Chinese buffet and a Sunday brunch. In 1991 Berna retired from the Double D but felt she still had more to offer and went to work for Biggar Home Care looking after clients in the Perdue district. This commitment of caring for others ultimately led to becoming Marshall’s full-time caregiver years later and up until he was placed at Diamond Lodge in Biggar in 2006. Berna traveled to the lodge and spent most days visiting Marshall up until his passing.
Berna enjoyed knitting and crocheting and ensured each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren received an afghan, mittens and a sweater or two. She participated in curling, bowling and attended many a bingo. She filled many hours playing crib, building puzzles or keeping her mind sharp with words and number puzzles.
In 2017, Berna made the move to Saskatoon. She spent the next several years residing at Oliver Place. With declining health, she made the move to private care at Cedar Gardens, followed by a stay or two in hospital before going to Long Term Care at Porteous Lodge.
Berna looked forward to family visits and gatherings and had enjoyed trips with Marshall to Hawaii, Alaska, the West Coast and many fishing and hunting trips with family and friends. She also spent time watching sports on TV and going to watch Easton play hockey. She looked forward to her and Sherman’s movie dates and taking a drive which ended up with a Tim’s donut stop and Verna and Ken’s Sunday visits and home cooked meals!
She always expressed “how spoiled she was” every time family came to visit her and how much she appreciated the time spent with them all.
Berna is survived by her children Verna (Ken) Yip, Carol (Jim) Mallas and Sherman (Lorna) Johnson.
