It gives us much solace to know and share that our loving father, Ambrose (Ambie) Brecht has entered the Kingdom of Heaven. With family by his side, he passed away peacefully at the Hospice at Glengarda, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 20th, one month after his 90th birthday.
Dad was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan on October 20, 1934, to Monica and Frank Brecht. He was raised on a farm near Viscount, Saskatchewan with his brothers Tony, Leo, Greg and Gilbert and his sister Anne. After finishing Teachers College, Dad moved to Creighton, Saskatchewan where he met our mother, Ella Faye Rice. They married on October 18th, 1958. Rod, Beverly, Debbie and Deena were blessed to have a father who graced our home and lives with the most love, thoughtfulness and kindness imaginable. Dad was a devoted husband, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was “OUR HERO”- he protected us, worried about us, believed in us, forgave us, prayed for us, and always treasured us. He was a peacemaker, and always had a positive outlook on life.
Dad’s love for children was the foundation for a distinguished 35-year career as a teacher, coach, vice principal and principal. He began his teaching career in Weyburn, Saskatchewan spending one year there before accepting a teaching position at Creighton School. He recognized the genius in every student, and he always endeavored to cultivate in them a sense of self-worth. Eighteen years of dad’s career were spent in a classroom setting, and the rest spent in administration. He retired in June 1991. He poured his heart and soul into his career, spending endless hours in the evening and on weekends to ensure no task was incomplete.
Dad was a gifted athlete. He led his college hockey team in scoring in his senior year. He played for the Creighton Aches and Pains and Old time Bombers well into his sixties. He was a formidable fastball pitcher, a respectable curler, and an “honest” golfer. He remained very active after his retirement: golfing, curling, and walking at the Whitney Forum well into his eighties.
Dad was very sociable, he thrived on community and conversation. He attended many parties with good friends and enjoyed a strong shot of rye whiskey. He also relished playing cards with his poker buddies, bridge partners, and cribbage cohorts.
Dad’s faith was the most important component of his life. He was an active, loyal and devoted member of St. Anne’s Parish in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He regularly volunteered at Church bazaars, fall suppers and numerous other events. Dad was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. His trust in the Lord never faltered; his faith never wavered. His faith gave his life meaning and enabled him to evolve into the loving man he was.
Amby is lovingly remembered by his children: Rod (Laure) Brecht, Debbie (Greg) Andersen, Deena (Doug) Slugoski, his grandchildren: Kyle, Charlie, (Talia) Dillon, Taylor, Misty Turner(Brendan), Brittany Bilquist(Dane), Shanine Neill (Donavin), Kole, his great- grandchildren, Londyn, Braye, Nova, Raze, Treyger and Sevrin, numerous nephews and nieces and his large circle of special friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Beverly, wife Faye, his parents, and all his siblings.
A warm thank you to everyone who supported Dad and our family as his health declined. Dad enjoyed every visit, phone call, text, email, card, snack, gift, prayer that he received. A special thank you to Father Paul Bringleson for making a surprise visit to see Dad while he was in Hospice in Saskatoon. Your blessings for Dad and our family provided us with so much comfort during a most difficult time. God Bless you.
Also, a heartfelt thank-you from our family to the exceptional doctors, nursing staff, care partners, support workers, housekeeping staff, and kitchen staff at the Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. We are extremely grateful to everyone for the loving and compassionate care that Dad received. It was a blessing that he was in your care until his passing.
In accordance with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Funeral Mass will be held at the St. Anne’s Catholic Church, in Flin Flon, Manitoba in the spring of 2025.
If desired, any donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Dad would often remind us, that his passing would be “Bye for Now”, I will see you later…... AMEN
