Allen Schaan

January 25, 1949 — July 1, 2025

It is with truly heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Allen Schaan on Tuesday, July 1st 2025 at Saskatoon City Hospital following a long struggle with poor health. He was loved and will be missed by his devoted wife, Norma Jean, a large and loving extended family and many dear friends.

Allen was predeceased by his beloved daughter Wendy, his parents Thomas and Reginna (Jean) Schaan, brother Kenneth Schaan, father-in-law Norm Wurtz and sister-in-law Karen Wurtz.

Allen was born and raised in Saskatoon. He attended Bishop Murray Elementary School and Holy Cross High School. He graduated from Saskatoon Technical Collegiate in 1968.

It was at Tech that Allen first met Norma Jean Wurtz, a lovely young girl who would become his wife!

Allen and Norma Jean were married in 1972 and welcomed their daughter Wendy the next year. Allen took on dad duties while Norma worked shifts as a nurse at St. Paul’s Hospital. Allen was so proud of Wendy and supported her in all of her life’s adventures. She was the light of his life! Their family time was very important to them and they enjoyed leisurely Saturday lunches, movies and collecting antique glass. Allen also treasured spending time with his extended family, whether it was around the card table, at a wedding, a reunion or BBQ at Watrous. Allen had a lifelong love of dogs. Their family pets, Mr. Muggs and Sam held a special place in his heart. Most recently, he also looked forward to visits by the therapy dogs, especially Timber.

Allen enjoyed going for a Sunday drive in the country or a road trip to Kelowna or Las Vegas. Allen and Norma Jean took great pleasure in travelling. They especially liked, taking cruises to Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean, or tours to Ireland, Scotland, England, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Allen was an avid sports fan and rarely missed cheering on his favorite teams. He was an armchair coach for sure! Together, they created a wonderful life full of wonderful memories.

Allen took pride in his work and the friendships he built along the way. He loved being on the move and took every opportunity to chat and joke with customers and co-workers. Throughout his life he worked at the Saskatoon Bessborough, Sherbrooke Nursing Home and the University of Saskatchewan Food Services. He retired from the U of S in 2011.

Allen was a faithful Catholic and a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. He truly cherished his Faith, Family and Friends. Over the last couple of years his faith carried him through some tough times.

We will remember Allen for his kindness, generosity, humor, practical jokes, determination and his appreciation of life’s simple things. We will miss you and are grateful that you have been a part of our lives. Rest in God’s Peace Allen.

The Funeral Liturgy will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (1224 12th Street East, Saskatoon) on Tuesday July 8, 2025 at 1:00pm. Interment will take place at a later date.

Cherished Memories Funeral Services are honoured to be entrusted with Allen’s funeral arrangements, Lyle Burkell Funeral Director.
